The City of Coral Springs will hold its 5th Annual Car Show on Saturday, February 4th at The Sportsplex on 2575 Sportsplex Drive from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Sportsplex is across the Tennis Center.

The City of Coral Springs will be having a "Shredathon" on January 28th, Saturday in front of City Hall at 9551 W. Sample Road from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM (or until the truck is full) to help prevent identity theft.

Residents may drop off personal paperwork to be shredded with an industrial-grade shredder. Bring paperwork that includes sensitive information like pre-approved credit card applications, bills, bank statements, pay stubs, forms with your Social Security number, junk mail; other documents with your and your family's name, phone numbers, e-mail address, home address, and so on.

There is a limit of 5 boxes per person. Additional boxes in excess of the limit are welcome by making a $5/box donation towards the Special Olympics. There is no need to take out staples, paper clips or rubber bands; but please refrain from bringing plastic bags, binders and clamps.

Barkland Dog Park - the first dog park in the beautiful city of Parkland, FL - officially opened on Saturday, January 7th.

The two-acre dog park has separate areas for large and small dogs, a dog washing station, water fountains for pets and their owners, picnic tables, covered pavilions, walking trails, benches and play equipment that includes tunnels and agility elements.

On December 31st, Saturday, from 9:30 PM to 1:30 AM, Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton will be transformed into New York's Times Square to celebrate the coming of the New Year. "Times Square in the Park" will be hosted by DJ Kaisa and will include live entertainment, an open bar, champagne toast and a much anticipated "ball drop" at midnight.

The City of Boca Raton's Annual Holiday Boat Parade is on Saturday, December 17th!

A traveling fireworks display will lead the parade of spectacularly decorated vessels along a 6-mile route on the Intracoastal Waterway. It will start at the C-15 Canal (Boca Raton-Delray border) at 6:30 PM and sail south to the Hillsboro Boulevard Bridge.

Viewing areas with bleachers are available at Silver Palm Park on East Palmetto Park Road and Red Reef Park on State Road A1A.

Everyone's also invited to donate toys to the U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots drive at the event. Sea Tow boats will be on the lookout and pick up dockside donations (signal them with a flashlight). Marine trucks will be at the viewing areas to accept donations as well.

According to the latest housing statistics released by Florida Realtors®, Florida real estate sales figures for existing homes and condos were up in the 3rd Quarter of 2011 compared to the 3rd Quarter of 2010. Third quarter existing condo sales was 13% higher in 2011 with 20,383 units sold compared to 17,980 units sold in 2010. Existing home sales rose 12% with 46,759 homes sold in 3Q 2011 while 41,728 homes were sold during the same quarter last year.

The statewide median sales price for existing homes was stable with $136,000 in 3Q 2011 compared to $135,900 in 3Q 2010. On the other hand, median sales price for existing condos increased 7% in 3Q 2011 with $89,600 compared to $83,700 in 3Q 2010.

“The quarterly numbers confirm the general improvement in Florida’s housing market in both sales and prices that we’ve been seeing since January 2011,” said Florida Realtors Chief Economist Dr. John Tuccillo. “However, this positive trend isn’t receiving the attention it’s due because of the interaction of people’s expectations, perceptions and reality. When you come out of a recession, people expect the real estate market to take a huge jump forward, and when it doesn’t, they perceive that the market is ‘bad’ or still down. However, the reality is that the Florida market is improving and it has been for some time – it’s just improving more slowly than initial expectations.”

Florida Realtors' records show a rise in real estate sales figures for existing homes and condos in the 2nd Quarter (2Q) over the 1st Quarter (1Q) of 2011. Existing home sales jumped 17.7% with 52,421 homes sold in the 2Q compared to 44,531 homes sold in the 1Q. Existing condo sales increased 8.1% in the 2Q with 25,263 units sold over 23,375 units sold in the 1Q.

Dr. Sean Snaith, director of the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Economic Competitiveness, pointed positive signs for a strengthening recovery. “Florida Realtors second quarter housing data shows that momentum in sales of both single family homes and condominiums continues to build, while median sales prices have also increased from first quarter to the second,” Snaith said.

The City of Coral Springs' Red Light Camera Program went live on August 15th. During its initial 30-day run, violators will receive warning notices. Starting September 14th, violators will be issued tickets in the amount of $158.

The safety program, that includes video and still photos, is designed to discourage drivers from running red lights and reduce dangerous traffic collisions.
